Conclusions

We have examined the limited history of the “traditional” marriage, and allowed its cultural and temporal specificity to call into question that model as “the one right way to do things,” or “the Christian way to do things.” We have also looked at some of the reasons that evangelicals hold on to this structure, many of which are based on fear: fear of male sexuality, fear of female emotional instability, fear of social anarchy, fear of feminism, fear of androgyny.

Is fear an appropriate starting point, or should we begin to make important decisions, such as how we structure our lives together, on some other basis? Perhaps we should ask different questions, such as: How can we construct a marriage that promotes the flourishing of both people? How can we encourage the widest use of who we are for God’s work in the world? In short, how can we love the other person most fully?

The next chapter will look at ways in which people have arranged their lives to balance domestic and professional work in the marriage overall, rather than in one person’s life or the other’s.
